오늘, 당신이 정말로 아는 것이 무엇인지, 자신에게 물어보라. 그리고 이때 당신이 생각하는 것, 자신이나 세상을 위해 희망하거나 원하는 것을 당신이 아는 것과 구별하라. 또한 당신이 두려워하는 것, 믿는 것, 아끼는 것, 소중히 여기는 것 등을 당신이 아는 것과 구별하라. 당신 능력이 닿는 데까지 최선을 다해 이런 모든 것을 아는 것과 구별하면서, "내가 정말로 아는 것이 무엇인가?"라고 자신에게 물으라. 이 질문에 당신이 어떤 답을 내놓든, 그것이 당신의 믿음이나 가정에서 나온 것은 아닌지, 혹은 다른 사람들의 믿음이나 가정, 심지어 인류 전체의 믿음이나 가정에서 나온 것은 아닌지, 계속해서 따져 보아야 한다.
