과거에서 독립할 때, 즉 과거의 판단, 과거의 관계, 과거의 아픔과 상처, 과거의 어려움 등에서 독립할 때, 당신은 현재 독립한다. 과거에서 독립한다는 것은 당신의 분리를 굳히거나 더욱 완벽하게 하는 것이 아니라, 오히려 당신이 관계에서 의미 있게 합류할 수 있도록 해준다. 다음 말을 무언의 이해로 삼으라. “함께하는 관계가 없다면, 당신은 세상에서 아무것도 할 수 없고, 어떤 것도 성취할 수 없으며, 어느 방향으로도 나아갈 수 없다. 또 어떤 진리도 깨달을 수 없으며, 가치 있는 어떤 것에도 공헌할 수 없다.” 그래서 당신이 과거에서 점점 더 독립되는 것과 마찬가지로, 현재와 미래에 참된 관계 안에 점점 더 포함될 수 있다. 왜냐하면 자유는 당신이 합류할 수 있게 힘을 주도록 되어 있기 때문이다.
