당신은 앎의 초보 학생이다. 이 출발점을 받아들이라. 자신이 초보를 벗어났다고 주장하지 말라. 왜냐하면 당신은 앎으로 가는 길을 모르기 때문이다. 대단한 가정으로 가는 길에서, 당신은 자신을 위해 많은 보상을 얻었을지 모르나, 그 길은 앎으로 가는 길과는 다른 방향으로 이끈다. 앎으로 가는 길에서는 실재하지 않는 것은 모두 버리고 참된 것은 모두 받아들인다. 앎으로 가는 길은 사람들이 혼자 상상으로 만든 길이 아니다. 왜냐하면 그 길은 상상에서 나오지 않았기 때문이다.

그러니 앎의 초보 학생이 되라. 정각마다, 오늘의 주제를 반복하고 나서, 그 의미를 깊이 숙고해보라. 당신이 자신을 어떻게 보든, 고상하게 보든 하찮게 보든, 전에 무슨 일을 했든, 자신의 업적을 어떻게 여기든, 당신은 앎의 초보 학생이다. 초보 학생으로서, 당신은 배울 수 있는 것을 모두 배우고자 할 것이며, 이미 안다고 생각한 것을 지키려는 짐을 지지 않을 것이다. 그러면 삶에서 당신 짐이 훨씬 가벼워질 것이고, 지금 부족한 참된 의욕과 열정이 솟을 수 있을 것이다.

앎의 초보 학생이 되라. 두 차례 긴 연습을 이 확언으로 시작하라. 그리고 고요히 앉아 자신이 받아들이는 것을 허용하라. 간청하거나 묻는 일 없이, 또 기대를 품거나 요구하는 일 없이, 마음이 조용해지는 것을 허용하라. 왜냐하면 당신은 앎의 초보 학생이므로, 무엇을 요청해야 할지, 어떤 것을 기대해야 할지 아직 모르기 때문이다.
